31 July 2108

Warm and sunny day. Strong breeze. Days are shortening. It's now beginning to start to get dark about 9.30pm. A day of sorting things out and reading. Lost a filling which is bloody annoying as I've only recently been to the dentist.

Went for a walk down to the Weaver. Most of the puddles have dried up and the stretch up to the locks is covered in a carpet of green. Have never seen this before.

Loved this cloud formation.

30 July 2018

Mixed day. It's still warm but we've had sunny spells and some heavy showers. Could still do with some more rain. I am now reading an excellent book about the artists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. It's a fictionalised account of their life together told in the voice of Suzanne Malherbe (Marcel). In the 1930s they lived in Paris and mingled with Breton, Dali and other luminaries of the time. Compelling stuff.

29 July 2018

The weather has finally broken. Heavy and prolonged showers. Haleluya!

28 July 2018

Went to the Mother-in-Law's. Saw a Peacock in her garden.

Warm, sunny day. Trip to Manchester to meet up with Adrian. More politics and beer. Manchester seems to have been invaded by bees.

Another very hot day with forecasters predicting temperatures of up to 35oC. Today I headed home and nearly missed my connection due to the train from Brockenhurst running late. Walked home from Hartford Station.

25 July 2018

Today we went to the New Forest Show. Highlights were Bees, Electric bikes - all way too expensive - and horticultural displays. Very hot and almost stifling in one or two of the marquees. Busy but not rammed.

24 July 2018

Today Carol and I went on the New Forest Tour - Blue Route. This is an open top bus which operates between early July to the first week in September - about once an hour. We chose the Blue Route because we wanted to visit Barton-on-Sea though there are plenty of other places you can stop off en route. We had lunch at the excellent Beachcomber Cafe. I can recommend to Kipper and the Cranberry and Bree sandwich. The ice creams are also pretty good.

23 July 2018

Travelled down to Brockenhurst in the New Forest to see my Stepmother Carol. Although it's a bit of a trek, - 4 1/2 hours on the train, it's an interesting party of the country which I enjoy visiting.

Have you got a cat? And a Kiwi Fruit? If so, you may have noticed that cats love Kiwi Fruit. It has effects similar to Catnip.

Have you got a brother-in-law? If so, you may have noticed his tendency to fall asleep and snore.

Off to Hale for Stuart's 50th Birthday party. Good BBQ and beers, including 50 bottles of "Stuarts Bru" - a present from his brother.

20 July 2018

I went to Glossop to meet my friend Peter for a Pennine walk. We decided to head up Kinder Scout via Wolfstones. We didn't make the summit because it started to rain and Peter hadn't taken a jacket so we headed down to Hayfield for a beer.

We're beginning to use the garden produce.

17 July 2018

I've never had much luck with this Hydrangea. This year it has actually begun to flower!

16 July 2018

The forecasters have been threatening us with some thunderstorms and rain for a while now and I woke up to find it was actually raining! It didn't last long though!

15 July 2018

Quiet day. It's still very warm and sunny. No rain for weeks now. The most exciting event was a trip to Aldi.

14 July 2018

Saturday and I'm off to Manchester to meet up with an old work colleague Paul. It was good to catch up and enjoy a few beers in some of Manchester's iconic pubs.

13 July 2018

Beautiful day! Went for a longer walk by the Weaver. One of its great features is the number of lagoons that were formed when the river was straightened and canalised for commercial river traffic. These have become a haven for wildlife, particularly waterfowl.

Someone has got round to building a stable in this paddock off Eaton Lane.

12 July 2018

New reading. Steve Howell was Labour's Deputy Campaign Manager during the 2017 election. This is a good account of how Labour did so well - from the inside.

11 July 2018

Went for a walk down to the River Weaver. The local farmer has planted Maize. I'd expect it to be higher at this time of year but you can see how parched the soil is. The River is covered in what looks like an algal bloom. I expect this is also due to the long hot spell we've had though the water in the Weaver seems is high as normal.
