29 October 2018

Up early because I couldn't sleep. Very cold at - 4. Clear sunny day and I made some warming broth with some leftovers from Sunday lunch, chopped some wood, fetched some kindling from the shop and made the first loaf of bread I've made in about 5 years.

Beautiful late afternoon sun and sky combined with Autumn colours made for some good photo opportunities.

28 October 2018

Clocks have gone back. First of the 'short' days - not much shorter but it feels like it because it goes dark so early. Went for a walk down by the Weaver. Beautiful day but quite cold.

Sunrise: 6.59 AM. Sunset: 4.57 PM.

27 October 2018

The clocks go back tonight at 2 AM. Had an easy day after a very late night last night and early to bed.

Beech Road, Chorlton

The Horse and Jockey, Chorlton Green, very close to where I used to live.

26 October 2018

Friday. Off to my old hometown of Chorlton to stay with my cousin Simon and his partner Theresa. Simon was the quizmaster at local bar Dulcimer. Before the start, I sneaked off for a pint in what was probably my favourite ever local - the Beech.

The crafty pint of Landlord, very good too!

25 October 2018

Grey and uninspiring day. Not cold but neither is it warm. Cleaned out the van and managed to find my Canon battery charger which I thought I had lost.

I am now an aficionado of low/no alcohol beer. It's much improved, actually tastes like beer and is reducing my alcohol intake so its a win-win! Here are two of my favourites.

24 October 2018

Good morning at the foodbank - though it wasn't very busy. Spent most of a grey and chilly afternoon getting my diabetic eye test done. You can't drive because the drops they put in your eyes make your vision blurry, so off to the bus stop to find that the bus was 10 minutes late. The whole test took about an hour. Then another late bus coming back.

Managed to take a blurry photo, with blurry vision, of The Democracy Project by David Graeber which I started re-reading on an impulse. This is a superb book that ought to be compulsory reading because most people don't understand what democracy is - and how it's been subverted and undermined for most of human history.

The excerpt is a quote by one of the founding fathers John Adams which illustrates the propertied classes fear of democracy - which is why it wasn't mentioned in the American Constitution. It illustrates why we are where we are.

23 October 2018

Went down to the shops for some supplies. A very pleasant walk in the sun. More leaves I'm afraid.

22 October 2018

Monday. I. Am. At. It. Again. Spending. Too. Much. Time. On. Twitter.

21 October 2018

Bright morning but became a really foul afternoon. Reading and shopping.

20 October 2018

Collected some wood for our stove and had a reasonable drive back to Cheshire. A bright sunny day. In the afternoon I popped into the Infirmary to have a lump on my finger checked out which looked infected to me. Anyway - I survived.

More autumn leaves - this time from MoL's wood.

19 October 2018

My obsession with this plant continues but at last, it's flowered! In the afternoon we went to the mother-in-law's to meet up with family and have a curry.

18 October 2018

A day I have been looking forward to. Off to Liverpool to meet my friend Peter and see Jane Weaver at Leaf on Bold Street. The weather was very bright and sunny but cold when you were out of the sun. We visited a few pubs first, The Dispensary, The Philharmonic and the Kazemier Garden. Then a Chinese meal in Chinatown. The gig and venue were very good. A great day out!

17 October 2018

Another day of volunteering at the foodbank - which I really enjoy - and Citizens Advice.

Yet another village photo, this time a newly renovated building on London Road. Speculation is that it will either be a wine bar or coffee shop. We are still waiting to see!

16 October 2018

Another village photo. This is a rather splendid house on Green Lane. Unfortunately, the new owners who moved in a few years ago decided to plant a hedge which obscures much of it. Part of the modern obsession with 'privacy' no doubt.

15 October 2018

Not been getting enough regular exercise recently so went for a walk by the Weaver. Fairly pleasant day. As I approached the river I heard a flock of geese flying overhead but I was just too late to see them landing on the water.

14 October 2018

Sunday. Bit of a lie in, some shopping then gardening. Autumn colours are looking good.

13 October 2018

A good evening with our friends Pete and Anthea. A trip to the pub followed by a stonking curry including my special prawn samber.

Sunday 21 October 2018

12 October 2018

Friday. Sorting out and shopping in preparation for visitors tomorrow.

11 October 2018

Miserable morning with strong winds and heavy rain. It brightened up a bit later in the afternoon and we were treated to a rainbow.

10 October 2018

Today I have been sorting out the widening of the entrance to our driveway - there's more to be done and much depends upon how the weather goes.

9 October 2018

There are toadstools in the garden, growing on the stump of an old Eucalyptus tree which was killed by a severe frost a few years back. I also cooked up a stir-fry using onions, chillies and garlic from the garden.

8 October 2018

Sorting stuff out. Taxing and insuring the van. It was cold later on so Rio got another blast of the fire.

7 October 2018

Doing some work in the garden and beginning to tackle some of the masses of weeds that have come up since I've taken my eye off the ball for a few weeks. The leeks and winter potatoes I planted are doing well but the spring cabbage has come under siege.

6 October 2018

Another quiet day. Fair weather. Ended up down by the marina but no ducks in sight.

5 October 2018

Quiet day but back home and back in the groove again. Its turned chillier so time for a fire. Rio always approves.

4 October 2018

The weather has changed - rain and we packed up and headed down the M6 back to sunnier and warmer Cheshire.

3 October 2018

Not so good today. Looked like rain. Went for a shorter walk into Penrith and then down and back up the river. It was probably only about 4 miles.

In the evening we walked up to the Horse and Farrier for a meal and some good beer.
